Hat Rack › Bucket hats and wide brims

Bucket hats on the second hook, from woven straw to wide cord-tied brims

Bucket hats sell on outline more than detail: how deep the crown is and how far the brim drops. The eight here cover straw, cotton, nylon and two wide-brim styles with chin cords, priced as the catalogue showed them on 20 October 2026.

Brim drop and crown depth on a bucket hat

A bucket hat is a soft crown with a brim that slopes down all the way round. The slope, often called the drop, decides the look more than anything printed on it: a short, steep brim keeps the face open, while a long, flatter brim shades the eyes and the back of the neck. The wide-brim black hat on this hook has the longest brim here and a cord with a toggle to keep it on in wind.

Crown depth works the same way as on a cap. Deep crowns sit low and cover the ears; shallow crowns sit on top of the head and can look small on larger heads. Sellers almost never give crown depth, so the side photo or a worn photo is the only clue. The check hat shot on a mannequin head is the fairest reference on this hook for that reason.

Brim edges are finished in one of three ways: several lines of stitching that stiffen the brim, a single hem, or a raw edge left to fray. A raw edge is a style choice, not damage.

Fabric and finish words on bucket hat listings

渔夫帽 (yúfūmào, fisherman hat) is the standard Chinese word for a bucket hat, and it appears in almost every listing title here. 草帽 is a straw hat; 编织 means woven; 镂空 describes the open crochet in the straw hat's other photos. 水洗 is washed, 做旧 is made to look aged, and 毛边 is the frayed raw edge.

Fabric names come next: 棉 for cotton, 尼龙 for nylon, 帆布 for canvas, 灯芯绒 for corduroy. These words describe what the seller says the hat is made of; no photo can confirm a fibre, and the price is usually a better hint of fabric weight than the label. 双面 means reversible, and doubles the looks in one hat if it is true.

Size lines repeat the cap pattern: 头围 with a centimetre range, or 均码 for one size. Bucket hats rarely adjust, so a head between sizes should take the larger one or look for a cord.

Bucket hat photos to ask for before keeping one

Ask three things of the photos. Is there a side view that shows the crown height? Is there a view from above or below that shows the brim width all round? And is the hat ever shown worn, or on a head-shaped stand, so you can see how the brim falls?

Nylon and polyester hats photograph shinier than they look in daylight, and dark colours lose their detail in flash photos. When a listing's colours look different from one photo to the next, trust the daylight shot. For straw and crochet, look at the weave closely: uneven gaps are normal in hand-finished straw, but loose ends near the band are worth a question to the seller.

Warehouse photos after purchase are taken flat on a table, which flattens a soft crown. A hat that looks crushed in a QC photo may simply be lying down.

Packing soft hats with the rest of a parcel

Soft bucket hats are the easiest headwear to ship: they fold, they squash and they recover. Cotton and nylon hats can travel flat between clothes. Straw and crochet are the exception; they crack or lose shape when folded, so in practice they go on top of a parcel or inside a box with something rigid.

If you are combining a straw hat with heavier items, say so in the agent's packing remarks. AllChinaBuy's archived user guide left room for such requests at the parcel stage, under the remark it asked for when a buyer submitted items for delivery; most agents taking orders now offer the same kind of note field, and some sell reinforced packing as a paid extra.

A bucket hat adds little weight, so it is one of the cheaper ways to round out a parcel that is already going. On its own it is rarely worth an international shipment.
